Building Your Newborn Wardrobe
A newborn wardrobe doesn't need to be extensive — it needs to be considered. A handful of well-made, versatile pieces will see you through the first few months far better than a closet full of things worn once.
Start with the basics
Bodysuits and rompers do the most work in a newborn wardrobe — easy to layer, easy to change, and comfortable for long stretches of sleep. A good starting point is five to seven bodysuits and three to four rompers, in soft, easy-to-mix neutral tones.
Add for the in-between moments
A sleepsuit or two for naps, a knot gown for the very first days, and two or three muslin swaddles round things out. These are the pieces you'll reach for most often, so it's worth choosing ones that feel as good as they look.
Think in seasons, not sizes
Rather than buying every size in advance, it helps to think about which season each size will actually be worn in. A heavier knit sleepsuit makes sense for a winter newborn; lighter cotton interlock suits a summer one. Buy a stage at a time, and let your baby's actual growth guide the next round.
The goal isn't a full closet — it's a small, thoughtful rotation of pieces that make morning and midnight changes just a little bit easier, for both of you.
